Fred Coon is a traditional Appalachian banjo player and storyteller and entertains audiences around the world. He learned many songs from his father and through his extensive Appalachian field recordings.

Fred met Bill in 1993 at the Encanto Park Music Festival in Phoenix, both already devoted to old-time Appalachian music. Since then, they’ve shared their passion through concerts, radio, television, and workshops across the U.S. and abroad—including a memorable encore at Australia’s Illawarra Folk Festival.

Bill is a master cabinetmaker and luthier, crafting exquisite furniture and instruments—especially mandolins, guitars, and banjos—renowned for their balance and tone. Fred runs a career transition company, has authored bestselling books, and brings humor and tradition to his banjo playing, rooted in 300 years of family heritage.

Together, they continue to perform, teach, and spread the joy of old-time music wherever audiences gather.
